Here is a picture of an engraving accompanying one of the poems: A woman in a wealthy household would have the time and education to decipher the poems in the book and admire the craft of the object. The smooth silk cover and small, yet elaborate, details worked into the scrap book’s construction clearly convey an air of wealth, refinement, and luxury. Affluent society of Landon’s time aspired to imitate the royal family and Landon’s literary annual, complete with a delicately sewn binding, intricately designed border, and fancy gilded pages, does just that. Landon’s work (top) targets an educated, upper class Victorian woman. Diablo 3 presents a different aesthetic than Landon’s Fisher’s Drawing Room Scrap Book, and in turn appeals to a different target audience. In the collaborative paper Aesthetics and Status Symbols of the Victorian Era, Letitia Elizabeth Landon’s literary annual is analyzed and interpreted as an artifact representing the female role in upper class society as well as the Victorian aesthetic (Fitzgerald, Jackson, Lind, Reutter). By comparison, Diablo 3, an action role-playing computer game, engages its users in a fantasy world where they acquire skills and various objects while rising through the levels and performing tasks and quests (Game Guide). ![]()
